Criminal cases may begin in a geographical area court for arraignment and lower-level proceedings. More serious Part A matters are handled at the Judicial District courthouse. New Haven County Judicial District
New Haven is a Connecticut judicial district, not a county circuit in the way some states use that term. Appeals from Superior Court generally go to the Connecticut Appellate Court, with some matters reaching the Connecticut Supreme Court. Probate Court appeals may go to Superior Court. Federal cases at the Richard C. Lee United States Courthouse are part of the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut and use PACER or CM/ECF, not the state Judicial Branch case lookup.
The New Haven court cluster is compact. The main Superior Court courthouse, GA23, the Richard C. Lee U.S. Courthouse, City Hall, the New Haven Green, New Haven Probate Court, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court office are all downtown. That makes in-person record work convenient in distance but not simple in custody. Each office controls a different record set.
New Haven County Lower Court Channels
Connecticut does not use justice of the peace courts or county magistrate courts as the primary public record route for New Haven County trial-court files. Lower-level criminal and motor vehicle work is handled through Superior Court geographical area courts such as GA23 and GA7. Housing cases use the Housing Session. Probate Courts are separate. Municipal police and parking ticket channels may hold records that do not appear in the Superior Court motor vehicle system, especially for local parking tickets.
For in-person visits, the Judicial Branch states that 235 Church Street has no courthouse parking and points users to nearby private garages, including the garage at Church and Grove and the Grove Street Garage. GA23 also has no courthouse parking and uses nearby private parking. Meriden GA7 is different because public parking is in a municipal lot near the courthouse and jurors can validate their parking stub.
Note: Searchers using "district court" for New Haven County should translate that term to Connecticut Superior Court before choosing a case lookup.
